FORBE W. SPENCER

PROFILE: Forbe Spencer was born October of 1904 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the son of T.W. Spencer, a Wichita fireman who had coursed greyhounds all of his life. Forbe Spencer was added to the PIONEER section in 1980.

HISTORY: The Spencer family raced a kennel at Hialeah in 1922; they also provided a racing kennel for the Wellston racetrack in Illinois and in Chicago. Besides having a kennel, Forbes was a starter for the first part of the meet during the opening season in St. Petersburg in 1925. Spencer raced at New Orleans, Butte, Tampa, Miami Beach, Jacksonville, Hollywood, Taunton, Raynham, Pensacola and at some tracks that opened one night and were closed the next day.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: More remembered for his inventions and innovations, Spencer is credited with having invented the wire muzzle used by greyhound owners today. He also pulled the first dog trailer and made artificial lures for the racetrack that were light and effective. Forbes was always looking for some way to make improvements in the industry. In the Hall of Fame is a trophy won by Spencer’s MOONEY HARE at Wellston in 1927, also the Gold Collar won by JEWEL HARE in 1940 at Miami Beach.
