DUANE RANDLE

PROFILE: Duane Randle was born in 1930, one of the famous Randle brothers who continued the racing tradition begun by their father, Boyd E. Randle, of Idana, Kansas.

HISTORY: In the 1940’s, three of Duane’s brothers owned and operated Randle Brothers Kennel just east of Wichita, Kansas. It was one of the largest and most modern breeding farms in the country. Duane enjoyed training the greyhounds under the apprenticeship of his oldest brother, Gene. Duane traveled to the racetracks, including Southland and St. Petersburg in 1952. He handled the kennel’s star, REAL HUNTSMAN. The brothers continued to operate the kennel until 1954, when an interstate highway split the Randle farm into two sections and the brothers later dissolved their partnership. His brothers set Duane up with a kennel of greyhounds and bookings of his own, including his first one at Taunton in 1956. He also was a trainer for Charles E. Mullen Jr. at Raynham. He continued training greyhounds in several states, including Florida, Colorado, Arizona and South Dakota. When his older brother, Gene, retired in 1973, Gene leased all of his greyhounds and equipment to Duane. In 1980, Duane won the Kennel Championship at West Memphis. Most of his greyhounds came from his brother, Arvin, but Duane also received some from his own farm in Arkansas.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The superstar of the Randle Kennel was All American REAL HUNTSMAN, a winner of 27 straight in one streak. REAL HUNTSMAN won Joe Linsey’s American Greyhound Derby at Taunton two years in a row, in 1950 and 1951. He was selected as one of the first greyhounds to be inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Duane’s other standouts included; NEAR YOU, the greyhound that won the 1979 Inaugural at Southland, as well as DUGGAN, REUNITED, AWFUL OPAL, HEATHER, JUDIANNA and AO.
