WOODROW “WOODY” BLACKWELL

PIONEERS: Woody Blackwell was born in Ladonia, Texas in 1923. He started his career in greyhound racing at age 7 working for Pioneer, Paul Boon in his kennel. Mr. Blackwell received PIONEER recognition in 1986 with over 50 years of devotion to the greyhound.

HISTORY: Woody traveled the country from California to Massachusetts with Paul Boon’s kennel, from the nineteen twenties until joining the service in World War II where he earned the bronze star for bravery. Blackwell continued with Boon after the war until 1962 when he established his own kennel with a booking at Pensacola Greyhound Park. He was continually in the top three kennels every year. In later years Woody worked with the R.E. Thomas kennel at Derby Lane and Southland.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Woodrow Blackwell has served as a director for the Florida Greyhound Association for eleven years and has contributed generously to all causes which benefit greyhound racing.
